Chicago elects Brandon Johnson as new mayor

Brandon Johnson is the new mayor of Chicago after defeating Paul Vallas, according to the Associated Press. Johnson won a runoff against his fellow Democratic candidate, with the central issue of crime dominating the race. Incumbent mayor Lori Lightfoot had been knocked out of contention in February. In his campaign, Johnson pledged support for more mental health services and opportunities for young people.
