The House of Representatives has approved legislation that would increase the US government’s legal debt ceiling by $1.5tn, despite Republican opposition to nearly all of President Joe Biden’s policies. The legislation, which was passed by 217 votes to 215, includes spending restrictions, as well as ending programmes such as the tax breaks for renewable energy signed into law by Biden last year.
