Permit to buy handgun no longer required in North Carolina


North Carolina residents can now buy a handgun without a permit from a local sheriff after the Republican-controlled legislature overrode the Democratic governor's veto. The short-lived permit system required sheriffs to perform character evaluations and criminal history checks of pistol applicants, which supporters believe was no longer necessary in light of significant updates to the national background check system.
