US becomes first major fishing nation to ratify subsidies deal -WTO chief

The United States has become the first major fishing nation to officially approve a World Trade Organization (WTO) deal that aims to cut subsidies contributing to overfishing worldwide. The agreement needs two-thirds of the WTO's 164 members to sign it to become active. Only a few smaller countries have accepted it so far. The deal aims to reduce the billions of dollars given in subsidies that are causing marine life depletion.
